Usually, yes. Sub-Zero engineered the sealed system for a twenty-year-plus life, and once you count cabinetry, panels and installation, a repair is almost always the cheaper path. We will tell you plainly when it stops making financial sense.
Far more often the condenser is loaded with dust and grease and cannot reject heat, so the compressor runs longer to reach the same temperature. Cleaning it properly resolves a large share of continuous-run calls with no parts at all.
Defrosting it manually only clears the symptom. Recurring ice means the defrost heater, terminator or control has failed, or humid air is leaking past a gasket that no longer seals. We find which one rather than guessing.

How Sub-Zero refrigerators fail
The most useful thing about the dual-system design is what it tells you when something goes wrong. If the fresh food compartment drifts warm while the freezer still holds zero, the fault is confined to that circuit: its evaporator, its fan, or its defrost components. The compressor serving the freezer is demonstrably fine, because the freezer is cold. That single observation removes the most expensive possible repair from the table before a technician even opens the door.
Airflow problems outnumber genuine refrigeration failures by a wide margin. Sub-Zero moves air through narrow ducts behind the interior panels, and when an evaporator fan slows or a defrost cycle stops clearing frost, those ducts choke. The cabinet does not fail dramatically - it drifts a few degrees, then a few more, and owners often adjust the setpoint downward rather than calling anyone. By the time the call comes, the evaporator is usually encased in ice and the fan has been running against resistance for months.
The condenser is the component that most often turns a healthy unit into a failing one, and it is entirely preventable. Sub-Zero condensers sit behind the upper grille and pull household dust, pet hair and cooking grease through their fins. As they load up, heat rejection falls, the compressor runs longer to achieve the same temperature, and eventually it runs continuously. A unit that "never shuts off" is far more often a dirty condenser than a dying compressor.
Door seals deserve separate attention because they fail invisibly. Sub-Zero uses a magnetic gasket that has to compress evenly against the cabinet face. Over years the magnet weakens and the rubber takes a set, and the seal stops closing at one corner - usually the bottom hinge side, where the door weight works against it. Warm humid air leaks in continuously, the defrost system cannot keep up, and what began as a ten-dollar gasket problem presents as an icing fault.
Electronic controls on Sub-Zero are well built but not immortal. The pattern we see is not sudden death but odd behaviour: a display that dims, a compartment that ignores its setpoint, an alarm that sounds with the door properly closed. The thermistors that report temperature back to the board drift with age, and a board acting on wrong information behaves exactly like a board that has failed. Testing the sensors before condemning the board is the difference between a modest repair and an expensive one.

Parts: what this repair actually needs
Evaporator fans, thermistors, defrost components and door gaskets are the parts that come off our truck, and between them they cover the large majority of Sub-Zero refrigerator calls. Control boards are ordered to the exact model and serial, because the BI, Classic and Designer series use different boards even where the cabinet looks similar. Compressors and sealed-system components are ordered rather than stocked and usually mean a second visit - which is precisely why we test airflow, defrost and the condenser thoroughly first, since those account for far more "not cooling" calls than the compressor ever does.

What Tampa does to this appliance
Tampa humidity is the single biggest environmental factor for Sub-Zero refrigeration. Every time a door opens, humid air enters and has to be condensed out by the evaporator, and our air carries far more moisture than the design assumptions behind the defrost interval. That is why frosted evaporators and hardworking defrost heaters are more common here than in drier states, and why a gasket that has lost its seal at one corner does more damage in a Tampa kitchen than the same gasket would elsewhere. Add ten months of high ambient temperature and a condenser that is working harder than it would anywhere north of here, and an annual condenser clean stops being maintenance advice and becomes the cheapest repair you will ever pay for.

Keeping your Sub-Zero out of trouble
- Vacuum the condenser behind the upper grille once a year, twice if you have pets - it is behind more Sub-Zero calls than any other single cause.
- Check the door gasket monthly by closing the door on a dollar bill at three points; if it pulls out freely at any of them, the seal has gone at that corner.
- Replace the air purification cartridge on schedule - it does not affect cooling, but it is what keeps produce lasting the way Sub-Zero owners expect.
- Leave a finger of space between stored items and the rear interior panel, since that is where return air enters and blocking it starves the evaporator.
- If the compartment drifts, resist the urge to turn the setpoint down - it masks the fault and makes the compressor work harder for the same result.

Repair or replace: how we think about it
Sub-Zero built these units to be serviced, and the economics usually reflect that. A fan motor, a thermistor, a defrost heater, a gasket or a hinge cartridge is a straightforward job on a unit that will then run for years, and on a built-in that is fitted into cabinetry the alternative is not simply buying a refrigerator - it is a new unit, new panels and frequently carpentry to make the opening work again.
The honest line falls at the sealed system on a unit well past twenty years, particularly when it is paired with corroded terminations and a control board that is no longer produced. At that point we say so on the first visit rather than quoting a repair that buys you a season. Between those two extremes - and that is most of what we see - repairing a Sub-Zero is the cheaper decision by a wide margin, and it is usually the faster one too.
