Why are my cubes hollow or undersized?

Almost always restricted water flow - a weakening inlet valve, a partly frozen fill tube, or a clogged filter. All three are same-visit repairs, and none of them are the ice maker module itself.

My ice is cloudy instead of clear. Is the machine faulty?

Often it is our water rather than the machine. Tampa water is hard, and dissolved minerals cloud ice as it freezes. A descale and a filter usually restore clarity without any parts.

The machine made one batch and then stopped.

That is a harvest fault. The cycle cannot start a new fill with the mould still full, so it stalls after one batch. The harvest motor or the hot-gas valve is the usual cause, depending on the machine type.

There is water underneath my clear-ice machine.

How Sub-Zero ice makers fail

Water supply is the first link and the most frequent failure point. The inlet valve meters a precise fill volume, and when it weakens, the mould underfills. You do not get an error - you get hollow or undersized cubes, which owners usually blame on the freezer temperature. The fill tube itself is the other half of this story: it runs through cold space, and if warm water sits in it after a cycle, it can freeze into a plug that blocks the next fill entirely.

Scale is what separates Tampa from most of the country. Our water leaves mineral deposits on every surface it touches, and in a clear-ice machine those surfaces are the evaporator plate and the water distribution system. As deposits build, heat transfer falls, the freeze cycle takes longer, and ice comes out cloudy instead of clear - which is precisely the quality the machine exists to deliver. Left long enough, production drops until the machine appears broken.

The harvest stage fails differently. On in-freezer modules a motor rotates the ejector arm to push cubes out of the mould; on clear-ice machines a hot-gas cycle releases the slab. When harvest fails, the machine completes a freeze and then stalls, because it cannot begin the next fill with the mould still full. Owners describe this as "it made one batch and stopped", which is exactly what it did.

Freezer temperature is the quiet cause behind a surprising number of ice complaints. An in-freezer ice maker needs the compartment at zero degrees to complete its cycle in the expected time. If the freezer is running at ten degrees for an unrelated reason, ice production slows or stops - and the ice maker is blamed for a fault that belongs to the freezer. We always verify compartment temperature before touching the module.

Drain problems affect standalone clear-ice machines specifically. These units drain water continuously as part of producing clear ice, and if the drain line is restricted or the pump fails, the machine either floods or shuts down on a safety. A machine that has water underneath it has a drain problem, not an ice problem.

What matters more than any single component on these units is descaling supplies and time - a machine that has produced ice on Tampa water for three years without a service descale often needs nothing replaced at all, just a proper clean. Ice machines are the one place in a Sub-Zero kitchen where replacement genuinely competes with repair, because a standalone clear-ice machine lives a hard life on Tampa water and the components that scale are the expensive ones. Even so, the majority of calls turn out to be a water valve, a filter, a thermistor, a harvest issue or straightforward scale - all of which are worth doing and none of which justify a new machine.
