The defrost circuit is where most freezer faults begin. A Sub-Zero freezer evaporator accumulates frost as a normal part of operation, and a heater clears it on a timed cycle. When the heater, its thermal terminator or the control governing them fails, frost stops being cleared and starts building. The freezer keeps working at first, because ice is itself cold - but airflow across the evaporator progressively chokes, and eventually the compartment cannot hold temperature no matter how long the compressor runs.

Evaporator fan failure produces a very similar picture with a different cause. The fan pushes air across the coil and through the compartment; when its motor slows, the coil gets colder than intended while the food space gets warmer. Owners often report the paradox directly: heavy frost on the coil but ice cream that will not stay firm. Distinguishing this from a defrost fault takes a direct test of the fan under load, not an inspection of the frost.

Freezer drawers add a failure mode that column freezers do not have. The runners carry real weight, and as rollers wear the drawer sits fractionally low. The gasket then seals along the top but not the bottom, and warm air enters continuously at floor level - where it does the most damage, because it condenses immediately on the coldest surfaces. A drawer that needs a firm push to close is telling you the alignment has already gone.

Sealed-system faults are the least common but the most consequential. A slow refrigerant loss does not stop a freezer outright; it degrades it. The compressor runs longer and longer, the compartment sits a few degrees above where it should, and the failure looks like a defrost or airflow problem for months before anyone measures pressures. That is why we rule out defrost, airflow and the condenser first - not to avoid the diagnosis, but because those causes are far more common and far cheaper.

Temperature display drift deserves a mention of its own. The thermistor reporting to the control board ages, and a freezer can genuinely be several degrees warmer than the panel claims. If an independent thermometer disagrees with the display, that gap is the fault - and it is a small part, not a system failure.

Gaskets are ordered to the exact part number rather than fitted from a universal roll - a Sub-Zero gasket carries a magnetic strip matched to the cabinet, and a generic replacement will not hold a seal. Sealed-system components are ordered when needed, which is why we confirm the diagnosis with measured pressures before committing you to that path.

• Let the freezer complete its own defrost cycles rather than defrosting manually; repeated manual defrosting hides a failing heater until airflow has already choked.
• Keep the compartment reasonably full but not packed - a full freezer holds temperature better, a packed one blocks the air path.
• Check the drawer or door gasket for frost around the opening, which is the earliest visible sign that warm air is getting in.
• Verify the actual temperature with an independent thermometer twice a year rather than trusting the display, since thermistors drift slowly.
• Listen for a change in compressor sound after a storm season - surges damage control boards, and the symptom often appears weeks later.

A freezer section that has stopped holding is almost always worth repairing. The parts that fail - evaporator fan, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, thermistor, control board - are all serviceable, and on a dual-refrigeration unit the fact that the refrigerator side is still perfect tells you the machine as a whole is healthy. Replacing a built-in because one of its two sealed systems needs attention is an expensive way to solve a moderate problem.
