Range Repair - Questions We Get Asked

My Viking burner clicks but will not light. What is wrong?

This is our single most common Viking call. It is usually a fouled brass burner port, a cracked electrode, or a failed spark module - all parts we carry, and normally a one-visit repair.

All my burners are clicking at once. Is that safe?

No. Shut the range off at the gas valve and stop using it. Continuous clicking on every burner means the shared spark module has failed in a stuck state, which can release gas without igniting it.

My Viking oven bakes unevenly. Can it be calibrated?

Usually yes. Uneven baking is often a drifting thermostat, a failing sensor, or a convection fan that has lost speed. We measure the actual cavity temperature at three points and recalibrate rather than just swapping the sensor.

Is it safe to keep using the range with one dead burner?

The other burners are generally fine, but do not use a burner that clicks constantly or smells of gas. Call us and leave that burner alone until we have looked at it.

Why are Viking burners brass rather than stainless?

Brass conducts heat better, which is a large part of why these burners perform the way they do. The trade-off is that the fine ports need proper servicing rather than a surface wipe, particularly in a kitchen that cooks every night.

My baking got worse gradually rather than suddenly. Is that still a fault?

Yes, and it is one of the most common. Sensors and thermostats drift slowly enough that cooks adapt without noticing. A calibration check tells you in ten minutes whether the oven is where it claims to be.

Viking Range Repair in Tampa - what the job actually involves

The Viking range is the appliance the brand was built on, and it is unapologetically commercial in design: sealed brass burners, a heavy gas train, and a convection oven spanning a very wide cavity. Those choices give you the output people buy Viking for, and they also determine exactly how the range fails after a decade of real cooking.

01

How Viking ranges fail

Viking burners are brass rather than stainless, and that material choice matters for maintenance. Brass conducts heat superbly, which is why the burners perform, but the ports are machined fine and they collect carbon from boil-overs and cooking oils. A burner that has been wiped clean on top can still be half-blocked underneath, and the symptom is a flame that burns yellow, lifts off the ports, or refuses to light at one side of the ring.

Ignition on a Viking is a shared-module system: each burner has its own electrode, but one spark module serves them all. That architecture produces two distinct faults with very different urgency. One burner clicking while the others work means a cracked electrode or a wet insulator on that burner. Every burner clicking continuously - including with the knobs off - means the module has failed in a stuck state, and gas can be released without ignition. The second is a stop-using-it-now situation.

The oven cavity is wide, and width is the enemy of even baking. Viking compensates with convection, but that means the fan and its element are doing more work than they would in a narrow oven. When the fan slows or an element leg fails, the compensation stops and the cavity reverts to its natural gradient - hotter at the back, cooler at the door. Owners describe this as the oven "going off", which is accurate but points in the wrong direction.

Thermostat and sensor drift is the quiet fault. A Viking oven that has run for a decade will typically read a little off, and because the change is gradual, cooks adapt without noticing. We measure actual cavity temperature at three points with our own probe rather than trusting the display, because recalibration solves a large share of "my oven bakes badly" calls with no parts at all.

The gas train itself deserves attention that it rarely gets. Valves stiffen, the knob feel changes, and a valve that no longer shuts off crisply is both an inconvenience and a safety matter. On a range that has been in place for fifteen years in a Tampa kitchen, we check every valve for clean shut-off as a matter of routine, not only the one the customer mentioned.

Problems we fix

  • A burner clicks continuously but does not light
  • Flame burns yellow, uneven, or lifts away from the burner ports
  • All burners click at once, even with every knob off
  • Oven heats slowly, unevenly, or well below the temperature set
  • Oven does not ignite at all, or the bake element never glows
  • Convection fan is noisy, or not turning at all
  • A control knob feels stiff, loose, or the valve will not shut off cleanly
  • Baking results changed gradually over months rather than suddenly
03

On a typical visit

  • Spark module, igniter and burner assembly replacement
  • Brass burner port cleaning and flame calibration
  • Oven thermostat, sensor and control board repair with full recalibration
  • Bake and broil element replacement, convection motor service
  • Gas valve service, connection testing and safety check
04

What a Viking technician checks first

  • Each burner individually, including the ports underneath rather than just the surface
  • Electrode condition and insulator integrity on the burner that misbehaves
  • The shared spark module under load when more than one burner is affected
  • Brass burner port and orifice condition, with flame pattern checked after cleaning
  • Real cavity temperature at three rack positions against the set point
  • Convection fan speed and element continuity as separate tests
  • Every gas valve for free operation and clean shut-off, not only the reported one
05

Parts: what this repair actually needs

Spark modules, electrodes, oven sensors and thermostats are stocked items, and between them they resolve most Viking range calls in a single visit. Brass burner assemblies and caps are ordered to the exact model - Viking changed burner profiles across the 5-Series, 7-Series and Tuscany lines and they are not interchangeable. Control boards are ordered by model and serial. What we do not do is fit generic igniters or universal burner parts on a Viking: the tolerances on a brass sealed burner are specific, and a near-enough part produces a flame pattern that is never quite right.

06

Keeping your Viking out of trouble

  • Clean the brass burner ports properly rather than wiping the surface; brass ports are machined fine and collect carbon underneath.
  • Have the oven calibration checked annually, since drift is gradual and cooks compensate without noticing.
  • Check every knob for clean shut-off, not only the one that feels wrong.
  • Keep the hood filters clean - grease-laden air settling back onto the burners is the main accelerator of port clogging.
  • Stop using any burner that clicks continuously and call, rather than working around it.
07

Repair or replace: how we think about it

Viking ranges are among the most repairable appliances in any kitchen. The brass burners, the valves, the igniters and electrodes, the elements, the fans, the hinges and the door - every one of those is a part rather than a reason to buy a new range. Owners in Tampa are routinely cooking on units that are fifteen and twenty years old, and the reason is that nothing in the construction wears out the way a mid-market range does.

The realistic limit is a specific generation running out of parts support, not the age of the appliance. If your model is at that point, we tell you which part is the problem and what the options are - a serviceable equivalent, a rebuild, or replacement - rather than ordering hopefully. Anything short of that, including ovens that will not hold temperature and burners that will not simmer, is a repair.
