My induction cooktop keeps shutting itself off. Why?

That is thermal protection doing its job - normally a cooling fan that has lost airflow, or an air path under the counter blocked by stored items. We test the module under load so the repair actually holds rather than recurring next month.

Can a cracked glass cooktop surface be replaced?

Yes, the glass is a genuine replaceable part. But stop using a cracked surface immediately - on induction and radiant units it is both an electrical and a moisture hazard.

Why does only one gas burner have a weak flame?

A single weak burner is almost always a blocked port or a partly clogged orifice on that burner alone. It is a clean and calibrate job rather than a parts job.

The cooktop will not detect my pan any more.

Test it with a magnet first - induction needs a ferromagnetic base in full contact, and a warped base stops making it. If the pan is genuinely suitable and the zone still will not engage, the detection sensor or power board needs service.

One electric zone only works on high. Is the element dead?

Usually not. That pattern points at the infinite switch losing its modulation rather than the element failing, and the switch is much the cheaper of the two.

It only fails to light after something boils over. Is that a coincidence?

No, it is a direct clue. A wet or contaminated electrode insulator leaks spark to earth instead of jumping the gap. Cleaning and drying it properly, then checking for cracking, usually solves it.

How Viking cooktops fail

On gas cooktops the dominant fault is the same as on Viking ranges - brass ports collecting carbon - but the geometry makes it worse. A cooktop sits flush in a counter, so spills reach the burner and the electrode faster and sit there longer than they would on a raised range top. The electrode insulator in particular takes the brunt: once it is contaminated or cracked, spark leaks to earth instead of jumping the gap, and the burner clicks without lighting.

Induction cooktops fail in a way that consistently confuses owners. A zone that shuts off mid-cook is almost never a dead zone; it is thermal protection working correctly. Each zone sits above a power module that produces significant heat, and that heat leaves through a cooling fan and an air path under the counter. Block that path - with stored items, or simply a tight cabinet - and the module protects itself by cutting output. The fault is airflow, presenting as an electrical failure.

Pan detection complaints on induction are often not faults at all. Induction requires a ferromagnetic base in full contact with the glass, and a pan that worked for years can stop being recognised once its base warps. We test with a magnet first because it costs nothing and resolves a meaningful share of these calls before any part is discussed.

Electric radiant cooktops are the simplest platform and fail most often at the infinite switch rather than the element. The switch is what modulates power; when it degrades, a zone works only at full output or cycles hard between off and maximum. The element is usually perfectly healthy, which is worth establishing before anyone quotes an element replacement.

Glass surfaces on both radiant and induction models are a genuine serviceable part, not a reason to replace the cooktop. What is not negotiable is using a cracked one - on either platform a crack is both an electrical hazard and a path for liquid to reach the components underneath.

Parts: what this repair actually needs

Igniters, electrodes and spark modules are stock for the gas units; infinite switches and the common radiant elements are stock for the electric ones. Induction power boards and pan sensors are ordered to model and serial because Viking revised the induction platform more than once and the boards are not cross-compatible. Glass tops are a genuine ordered part. On gas cooktops we fit Viking brass burner components rather than universal parts, for the same reason as on the ranges - the port geometry determines the flame, and a near-enough burner never produces quite the right one.

What Tampa does to this appliance

Humidity is the factor that shows up specifically on gas cooktops here. The electrode insulators sit at counter level, they catch every spill, and in a kitchen where the air itself carries moisture for most of the year they simply stay damp longer than they would in a drier climate. A damp insulator leaks spark to earth, which is why "it only clicks without lighting after I cook something that boils over" is such a common description in Tampa homes - and why drying and properly cleaning the insulator, then checking it for hairline cracking, resolves so many of these calls without parts.

Keeping your Viking out of trouble

  • Dry around the electrodes after spills; in our humidity a wet insulator stays wet long enough to stop the burner lighting.
  • Service the brass ports on gas models yearly if the cooktop is used daily.
  • Keep the under-counter space clear on induction models so the cooling path stays open.
  • Check pan bases for flatness before blaming induction detection.
  • Take any cracked glass out of service immediately - it is both an electrical and a moisture hazard.

Repair or replace: how we think about it

A Viking cooktop has very little in it that ages out. Brass burners can be cleared and, if damaged, replaced; electrodes, spark modules and valves are all parts; the top itself normally outlasts the kitchen around it. A cooktop that lights unreliably or will not hold VariSimmer is a service job, not a purchase decision, and it usually finishes in one visit.

Replacement enters the conversation in two situations. The first is cracked glass on a ceramic or induction model, which is an electrical and moisture hazard rather than a cosmetic flaw and is not repairable. The second is a top that has been drilled out or damaged by previous attempts at cleaning the ports, where enough castings need replacing that the numbers stop making sense. Both are visible on inspection, and you will hear which one applies before you spend anything.
