Zone control is where most faults live. Each zone has its own sensor, its own damper regulating airflow from the evaporator, and usually its own circulation fan. When one zone drifts while the other holds its setpoint, the refrigeration system is provably working - the fault is isolated to that zone hardware. It is the cheapest kind of wine cellar fault to fix and the easiest to identify, provided the technician thinks in zones rather than in cabinets.

Glass door condensation causes more alarm than it should. The glass is the coldest large surface in the cabinet, so humid room air that leaks past a tired gasket condenses on it exactly as it would on a cold window. Fogging is therefore usually a seal symptom rather than a refrigeration failure - but it still needs fixing promptly, because sustained moisture lifts labels and eventually damages the wooden shelving.

Vibration matters more in a wine cellar than in any other appliance, and it is the fault owners are least likely to report. Viking damps the compressor deliberately, because vibration disturbs sediment and accelerates ageing in the bottle. When a compressor mount hardens or a fan bearing starts to go, the cabinet develops a hum that transmits straight into the racks. The wine is affected before anyone thinks of it as a fault.

Whole-cabinet warming points at the condenser first and the sealed system second. A loaded condenser makes the compressor run continuously for a result it used to achieve easily, and in a wine cellar - which is often built into millwork with limited ventilation - that shows up as a unit that cannot reach its lower setpoints on warm days. Genuine refrigerant loss is less common, and we confirm it by measurement rather than assumption.

The UV-filtering glass and the interior LED lighting exist for the same reason: to keep light and heat away from the bottles. A flickering LED is worth attending to not because the light matters aesthetically, but because the flicker usually indicates a driver or connection issue on a circuit shared with other controls.

Sensors, dampers, circulation fans, lighting assemblies and damping hardware make up most of what these cabinets need, and they are stocked on the van. Door gaskets are ordered against the exact model, since the glass door profile changed between Viking generations and a near-match will not seal. Compressors and sealed-system components are ordered only after measurement confirms them, because on a wine cabinet a zone fault imitates a refrigeration fault convincingly.

• Put a thermometer on a middle rack in each compartment and read it against the display twice a year.
• Keep the cabinet reasonably full; empty racks swing further with every door opening.
• Wipe the gasket and the glass seal with a damp cloth every few months so grit does not take a set in the rubber.
• Leave the ventilation clearance alone - a filler strip added during a remodel is a common cause of summer drift.
• Act on a hum you can feel through the racks rather than getting used to it; damping exists to protect what is in the bottles.

The reason to repair wine storage rather than replace it is sitting on the racks. A cabinet running two or three degrees out of band, or cycling hard enough to vibrate, is affecting a collection that is normally worth several times the appliance - which makes a control board, a fan motor, a sensor or a gasket an easy decision rather than a calculation.

Most faults here are exactly those parts. The point where replacement becomes reasonable is a compressor failure on an older cabinet, where the repair approaches the cost of a new unit. Even there, if the cellar is built into millwork, the cost of making a different cabinet fit the existing opening belongs in the comparison - and in a custom kitchen it is frequently the larger number of the two.
