Most refrigerators cool one compartment and bleed cold air into the other. By volume the condenser leads everything. The symptom is a unit that holds temperature in January and slides in August, often with a compressor that runs almost continuously and a control board that eventually gives up under the load.

After that: evaporator fan motors, which fail quietly and starve one compartment of air; defrost heaters and thermistors, which produce frost build-up on the evaporator and a slow warm drift; door gaskets and hinge cartridges, which stop sealing on heavy doors that have settled a few millimetres over a decade; ice makers, which on Miami water scale and stall; and control boards, which fail on their own schedule and much faster after a storm season.

A 700 or 600 Series unit is not something you roll out. It is fastened into a surround, it may carry a custom panel weighing more than the door beneath it, and the clearance the installer left is the only path the condenser has to reject heat. Pulling one to reach the sealed system or the rear machine compartment is a careful, planned operation - not something to improvise with a dolly and optimism.

That also explains a category of fault that has nothing to do with the appliance. Millwork added after installation, a toe-kick panel screwed tight to the grille, a filler strip closing off a return path - each of those turns a healthy unit into one that runs warm every summer. We check the installation before we condemn the refrigeration, because the fix is sometimes carpentry rather than a compressor.

Sealed-system work - refrigerant, compressors, driers - is done to code by licensed technicians, or it is not done at all.

Call immediately if the refrigerator compartment is above forty degrees, if the freezer has risen enough to soften its contents, or if there is water on the floor. Those are hours-matter situations, both for the food and because a leak under a built-in reaches cabinetry and subfloor before it reaches anywhere you can see it. Same for a unit that has stopped entirely or is tripping a breaker.

What can generally wait for a normal appointment: a slow drift of a few degrees, frost building on the rear panel, an ice maker producing poorly or not at all, a door that no longer pulls fully home, a noisy fan, or a display showing a service code while temperatures are still correct. None of those are harmless, and all of them get worse, but they are not a reason to lose a night of sleep.

If you are in the first group, the practical advice while you wait is simple: do not keep opening the door to check, move what you can to another appliance, and leave the setpoint where it is rather than turning it down, which only makes a struggling system work harder.
