Coffee System Repair - Questions We Get Asked
F74 points at the brew unit - typically a jam, a worn seal, or a drive fault. It is a rebuild rather than a write-off, and it is one of the more routine repairs we do on these machines.
Check grind and strength settings first. If those are right, it is normally a scaled boiler, a tired pump, or a brew unit no longer holding pressure - all of which produce exactly that combination.
Every eight to twelve weeks on unfiltered Miami water, plus an annual brew unit service. That schedule is the difference between a ten-year machine and a four-year one.
Stop using it and call us. A slow leak inside built-in cabinetry damages both the electronics and the cabinetry itself, and it rarely resolves on its own.
It usually means the burrs are dull or something hard has passed through. Replacing the burrs and recalibrating the grind fixes both the noise and the extraction quality that went with it.
On Miami water, very much so. It extends the descale interval considerably and reduces the load on the boiler, pump and brew unit - the three most expensive components in the machine.

Miele Coffee System Repair in Miami - what the job actually involves
A Miele CVA built-in coffee system is the most mechanically complex appliance in most kitchens: a grinder, a brew unit, a pump, a milk circuit and a heater packed into a cabinet-depth chassis that has to work every morning. Almost every fault we attend traces back to two things - the brew unit or scale - and both are repairable.

01
How Miele coffee systems fail
The brew unit is the heart of the machine and the source of most faults. It compresses ground coffee, holds pressure while water passes through, and then ejects the puck - a full mechanical cycle, several times a day, for years. Its seals harden, its drive gears wear, and grounds work into places they should not. The F74 code most owners eventually meet is the machine reporting that this cycle did not complete, and it is a rebuild rather than a write-off.
Scale is the second dominant factor and the one Miami water accelerates hardest. Mineral deposits form inside the boiler and the narrow hydraulic paths that carry water to the brew unit. The first symptom is not a fault but a change in the cup: coffee arrives cooler and thinner because the boiler cannot transfer heat and the pump cannot maintain pressure through restricted passages. Left long enough, scale becomes a blockage and a blockage becomes a pump failure.
Grinder faults are mechanical and usually obvious. Burrs dull gradually, which changes extraction quality before it changes anything else; foreign objects - a small stone in the beans is the classic - produce a sudden jam. A grinder that has become noisy is telling you the burrs need replacing, and grind calibration afterwards matters as much as the burrs themselves.
The milk circuit is the part most affected by how the machine is used rather than by age. Milk residue in the tubing and valves is an excellent growth medium, and a system that is not rinsed after use will eventually block, foam poorly, or draw no milk at all. Much of what we do here is thorough cleaning and valve replacement rather than complex repair - but it does need doing properly, and it is the one area where neglect shows fastest.
Water leaks inside the cabinet deserve immediate attention rather than monitoring. These machines are built into cabinetry with electronics beneath and around them, and a slow leak from a hose fitting or a seal does its damage out of sight. A machine that has water underneath it should be taken out of service until the source is found.
02
Problems we fix
- An F74 or other brew-unit fault on the display
- Coffee arriving weak, thin, or noticeably cooler than it used to be
- Grinder noisy, jammed, or not grinding at all
- Milk system not frothing, or not drawing milk through at all
- Water leaking inside the cabinet or pooling under the machine
- A descale message that will not clear after descaling
- The machine runs a cycle but produces little or no coffee
- Grounds appearing in the cup or in the drip tray
03
On a typical visit
- Brew unit rebuild, reseal and replacement
- Full descale of the boiler and water circuit
- Grinder burr replacement and grind calibration
- Milk circuit cleaning, valve and tubing replacement
- Pump, heater and control board repair
04
What a Miele technician checks first
- Brew unit condition - seals, drive gears and full cycle completion
- Scale load in the boiler and the hydraulic path, not just the descale status
- Pump pressure under load rather than at rest
- Grinder burr condition and grind consistency across a full dose
- Milk circuit tubing, valves and rinse behaviour
- Every hose fitting and seal inside the cabinet for slow leakage
- Water filter age and supply hardness, which drive the descale interval
05
Parts: what this repair actually needs
Brew unit seal kits, grinder burrs, milk circuit tubing and valves, and water filters are stocked items - between them they cover most of what these machines need. Complete brew units are ordered by model when a rebuild is not viable, though that is less often than owners expect. Pumps and boilers are ordered as required. The most valuable thing we bring to a Miele coffee machine is not a part at all but a proper service descale: a machine that has only ever had consumer descale cycles run on Miami water usually needs deposits removed by hand before any new component will perform.
06
What Miami does to this appliance
Our water hardness is the single factor that determines how long a Miele coffee system lasts, and the gap between the manual and reality is wide. Where documentation might suggest descaling every few months, machines on unfiltered Miami supply realistically need it every eight to twelve weeks, and a filter on the water line changes that equation dramatically. The second local factor is heat: these machines are built into cabinet stacks that sit in kitchens running warm for most of the year, and a boiler working against a hot enclosure ages faster. Where we are already opening a cabinet for a repair, we check the ventilation clearance, because a machine that cannot shed heat will keep coming back.
07
Keeping your Miele out of trouble
- Descale every eight to twelve weeks on unfiltered Miami water rather than the interval in the manual.
- Rinse the milk circuit after every session; milk residue is the fastest way to block the system.
- Fit a water filter - it protects the boiler, pump and brew unit, which are the three expensive components.
- Have the brew unit serviced annually rather than waiting for an F74.
- Take any water inside the cabinet seriously and stop using the machine until the source is found.
08
Repair or replace: how we think about it
Built-in coffee systems are expensive to replace and frequently cheap to fix, which is a good combination. The brew unit, the pump, the valves, the grinder burrs, the milk circuit and the seals are all serviceable, and a machine that has stopped mid-brew or thrown a fault is usually asking for one of them rather than announcing the end of its life.
The decision turns when water has been inside the cabinet for a while. Long-term leaking onto the electronics, or a machine that has been run on unfiltered supply without descaling until the boiler and pump have both suffered, can add up past what the machine is worth. We look at that before quoting rather than after, and if the number is going to be uncomfortable you will hear it on the first visit.
